Speaking of Comic Con 2011

Do you remember my recent post, wherein I discussed the comics I’ve especially enjoyed lately?

Well, three of the comics I mentioned just won Eisner awards at this year’s Comic Con. Joe Hill, writer of Locke & Key won Best Writer. CHEW won Best Continuing Series. And Nate Simpson won The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer award!

So iffen you’re at all interested in giving comics a try, try these! And even if you aren’t that interested in storytelling via comics, you should try NONPLAYER, because look how gorgeous:

I used to want to go to San Diego’s Comic Con

I used to feel all “ohhhhh. I wish I could be there.” But while reading tweets and hunting through Flickr for Comic Con this year, I’m thinkin’ *that’s* the way to enjoy it. The lines sound like the longest, worstest EVAR. And I’ve seen lots of disgruntled tweets about people waiting for HOURS and still not getting in to see something they longed for.

Plus, I’m not a huge fan of huge crowds.

Even so, it looks like fun. And it’s definitely fun to hear the news from there. I can’t wait to see Guillermo del Toro’s new comic, THE STRAIN, coming this fall. And I had no idea filmmaker Ridley Scott was coming out with a new film, similar to the creeptastic glory of the Alien franchise, Prometheus.

I DID Know, and am eagerly waiting for, the new TV series The Legend of Korra, or Avatar: The Legend of Korra, which is a follow-up to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is one of my most favorite recent TV shows.

A lot of you aren’t on tumblr, so mebbe you didn’t see this example of art for Korra, which debuted at Comic Con:

Of course, I’m also looking forward to reading spectralbovine‘s upcoming recaps of Comic Con. But in the meanwhile, I’ll go back to spending too much time reading tweets, etc. Heh.

Here’s my fave pic from the con so far:

Deathly Hallows, Part 2- (spoiler free, duh)

(image from tumblr, but I can’t find who made it)

It kept me up until 3:30 am! Whoa. And I was alert–lively, even! It was especially magical to come out of the theatre, with more than three thousand other HP fans, into the light of an almost full moon.

Three thousand! At one theatre! They announced that it had broken all their previous records, including the most recent one, set by one of the TWILIGHT films — which got a huge roar of approval.

It was cool to leave our particular screen, or “house” as the management referred to it, and see this:

Waiting with the huge crowd was fun, although not as fun as waiting for the midnight release of the final book. But I don’t know if that’s just me–I was a lot more excited to get the book than see the movie.

We saw some fab costumes, but even though I DID remember my camera, I did NOT remember to check the batteries, and it ran out of power (hence the less-than-awesome quality of the cell phone pic above.)

Here’s a wee, mean Draco:

He was with this Bellatrix:

I went with my 12 year old son, and he really wanted to see it in 3D. I love 3D for animated films, think it’s jaw-dropping, but don’t find it nearly as compelling with live action. However, the Harry shaped specs were an unexpected and delightful bonus!

So is anyone else going to a midnight showing of the last Harry Potter film?

Are you? Huh? I’m excited! (even if I didn’t love-love-love the last two books. shhhh. I DO love-love-love the first . . . five? Definitely 1-4.)

Midnight! I can’t remember the last time I went to the movies at midnight. It may have been wayyyy back when I was Magenta for Rocky Horror, which was a comically long time ago.

I did go to the midnight release for the last HP book. Does that count? And I stayed up reading some of it, so that was probably as late as this will be.

I am taking my camera, so maybe Friday I’ll have some pics of costumed movie-goers!

If I’m functioning well enough after sleep-deprivation to post them.

Google+ oh, Google Plus

Does anyone who wants one still need an invite? ‘Cause I could email you one. For someone who always avoided Facebook, I’m having fun playing with Google+. Although it has only been one day.

Leave your email in a comment if you want an invite. Or send me one o’ them LJ messages if you don’t want to post your email here.

Three Things on the Fourth

So am I the only one who puts off engaging with social media or posting to my blog until I’ve done a certain amount of writing and then I don’t write much, or what I consider enough, and end up not doing EITHER fun thing? (except for tumblr. I always find a spare ten minutes for the awesome pics on tumblr.)

Happy Independence Day, USians! Any special plans? It’s a dark rainy day here, and my daughter has a mild tummy bug, so it looks like I’ll be able to watch a lot of the WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN marathon on Nicktoons today. Because nothing says the Fourth of July like watching the adventures of a cranky, violent Canadian. I also plan to make strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. (none of that Cool Huh-wip for us) Mmm, I’m getting hungry for it as I type.

Speaking of this holiday weekend, it has taken on a new significance for me. A significance that will probably fade over the years, but it was two years ago this weekend that I found out my marriage was not what I thought. And the next detail I’m going to write feels like an abrupt change of subject, but I realize that it isn’t. It’s very me. The second Transformers movie opened that same weekend, and that was hugely helpful. Because nothing helps relieve deep emotional shock like watching giant robots blow things up. Ha! I case you haven’t noticed, I might be a bit odd. I haven’t seen the third film yet. But I will. Oh yes. I can’t wait to see the giant worm-like ones eating skyscrapers. But happily, there’s no enormous leaden bag of stress strapped to me this year.
